Alright guys, the entries have been judged, and the winner has been announced!

and the winner is....

AnimatedApe, with his amazing fur shield!

Congratulations on winning, and here's what the judges think:

"Animatedape's entry really surprised me! This wasn't at all what I had expected when I thought about hand painted textures.
The diffuse texture is a real piece of craftmanship, and he has successfully defined the different materials as well as depth.
Two thumbs up from me!"

"Even though GrimmWrecking didn't submit his final entry, I think his piece deserves some feedback.
Grimmwrecking's texture is definately in line with the theme of the contest, but seeing as he didn't submit his final entry in time, he could not be considered. I think GrimmWrecking did a really good job defining both the wood and metal surfaces. One think I reacted on, was that there is too much red and contrast in the wood texture. If he would have finished the texture, and fixed up the wooden areas, this would have been a worthy contestant!"

"AnimatedApe's final entry was really astounding: you can almost feel the fur! also, the metal at the back of the shield looks incredibly convincing, to a degree that it's hard to beleive it's not really a phototexture. Even though the texture doesn't align 100% with what the contest was going for, there is defenitely no arguing the point that of all the entries this was the one with the highest quality; congratulations!"

"Even though Grimmwrecking did not submit a final image and could not be considered, I think he deserves some feedback for the good job he still did.
First of all, the metal looks really really convincing and completely stylized with the look we were going for with this contest, so gratz on that :) the swan too, compliments the image. the wood on the back could still use some work, but overall I really think this could have been a more than worthy contestant for first place :) "

"First of all; Congrats on winning, you made a great piece.
I like the way you made the fur, that's really doing good justice and is unusual compared to the regular wooden or iron shields you see.

I'd also like to do a quick note on the back of the shield, you actually managed to make it look interesting, and add another material to the mix.
Good work with the shadow work, tho you forgot to add some tiny shadows a long the strings on the back, but that's just nit-picking.

Again, good work and congratulations on winning."

Congrats ape, it is definitely awesome work. I'd love to see a video of your texturing process sometime, the fur is wicked and I can only imagine time consuming, but it does sell a convincing look.

As for the feedback, thanks guys, I'll be finishing it up on my own time. Maybe do a couple more variants to help buff up my texturing skills. I've always been of the opinion that a texture can make or break any model regardless of the intended style. I look forward to more stuff like this in the future, and who knows when my knew rig gets here, maybe I'll actually finish something!

Thanks man.

I was actually going to post in your thread for a walkthrough of your metal texture as well, I thought mine ended up looking more like stone than metal, whereas yours actually looked like metal! I couldn't get the lighting right for it, so I ended up creating a displacement map and pulling the lighting info out of Maya before painting over it in Photoshop for the beaten effect.

The fur on the outside was the most time consuming, the fur in the center is a couple of greyscale brushes I created to save some time, and then colored with an overlay layer before running over it with the sharpen brush. Might do a quick video.

So when's the next contest guys?

Congrats AnimatedApe, that's some fine work there. It was good to experiment with a different style of texturing. Of course, I'll need more practice.

Heh, yea, once I get my new comp I'll do a little tutorial on how I did it. Since I'm on borrowed power atm, I don't have the time with the comp to put a good walkthrough. So probably the weekend of Saturday the 26th, as I should be up and running on the 25th :D.
