    SSD impressions

    Well I'd never...

I just installed an Intel X25 SSD and right off the bat Photoshop ran like a dream...a very liquid and flowing dream. No other parts were changed.

I have a "normal" WD 1.5TB HDD which I used up to this point and it pretty much stuttered with every stroke of ze Wacom and I was afraid my machine had somehow become very obsolete (775 Core 2 Quad 2.8Ghz, 4Gb DDR2 and a GTX 280 OC'ed). I have a habit of keeping my Windows as clean as possible and checking the performance if I suspect a hiccup, but it was not showing anything out of the ordinary. I grabbed that SSD from work to test it out before buying...

Now. Holy Crap. Simple, pure, effective. Need to buy. Plus it's silent

Anyone else here having similar experiences with this new breed of HDDs? Or maybe you're thinking of taking the leap?

Just for the record, every machine at work has one installed that runs the OS and other software and they have been very reliable and...well...fast Software I use at work includes PS and Max with Win7 64bit.

Disclaimer : I do realize that despite my best efforts the other OS might be completely cluttered and I might be under the influence of "new stuff is bettar" but it really does affect the performance in a big way, that much is sure.

    Re: SSD impressions

I've heard similar stories from reviews.

I'm definitely looking forward to my upgrade, but I'm going to wait at least another year or two for the hard drives to get a little bigger... or until I find myself with a considerable sum of spare money.

I hear they improve pretty much everything in terms of speed, things such as OS loading times, and file access; if you think about it Hard Drive speed hasn't increased much in the last decade, and these new SSDs are more efficient, silent, and nearly twice as fast as a 15k rpm drive.

Like I said, I'm looking forward to the upgrade... in a year or two.

    Re: SSD impressions

Yeah ssd's can make a huge difference. I just built a high-end workstation geared towards 3D work and game development specifically. The ssd I got rips along incredibly fast (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820227578). I use it only for the os, and software.

If you have your os on your ssd and have lot of ram make sure you shrink the size of your pagefile otherwise you'll notice a mysterious large chunk of your hd has vanished into thin air. Also get rid of the hibernation file hiberfil.sys by running cmd.exe as administrator and type powercfg -h off. When I installed windows my pagefile was 16 gb (my system has 16gb of ram) and hiberfil.sys was 17gb.. So I set my pagefile to 1gb and got rid of the hibernation file.

I highly recommend it I would get a second one if it wasn't so expensive!
